10 slum houses in Surin burn down at midnight

A fire swept through a slum community in Surin’s Muang district early on Tuesday, destroying around 10 homes, police said.


Police said the fire at the Nong Bua community behind the Surin Bus Terminal started at 12.10am and engines took about half an hour to put out the blaze.



No one was injured in the fire that caused community dwellers to grab their valuables and flee for their lives.



Police have yet to investigate the cause of the fire.

I shall redefine. Surin Majestic excluded. That area that had the Green Mango, Oasis and the Farang Connection yes its a shit hole. Add the homes that are packed like sardines on the back side that just burnt... Its is an accident waiting to happen and a prim time for let's say urban renewal.:rolleyes:

That area is much like many areas in Surin. Older buildings in need of some rehab. Weird that the Thais seem to think a paint job when a building is first erected that it will last the life of the building. Some paint (Christ, anything light besides the ubiquitous flat white, please) would do wonders for these places, flowers and trees, would love to see window boxes with many colors of flowers around here, fix the potholes and repave the sois maybe more often, the many sitting buses are an eyesore and take up much needed parking in that area, rooftop gardens possibly, etc, etc, etc. The building owner/s just doesn't want to spend the baht to upkeep these buildings it seems. Same the world over actually.

Had the same happen here in moung SSK. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if this was from the same source, spaghetti aging electrical wiring.

There are a couple in the village near me. The village folk like to talk to me about them. They live in slum houses. Don't ask me why their Thai families keep them around. I have been told by one of the families he is on the verge of been kicked out. They cannot stand the embarrassment any longer.

This is not a nice country to live-in as a farang if you are alone & poor

Spot on there Cent. I can't fathom it out - they live in a property that is bug-ugly for years and years without giving it any care or attention. Then they buy a car, and wash the damn thing every day!

I was staggered on arriving in Surin and asking how old were some particularly run-down properties to be told that they were very old - 25 years! I explained that my previous house was built over 100 years earlier, and they were incredulous.

I find it amazing that the shops like Thai Watsadu, Home Pro, Global etc., have so much paint in stock, to say nothing of the smaller specialist paintshops that carry even more. If no-one is painting, where the hell does it all go? (Apart from on the walls of all those empty new shophouses all over the city and the ring road areas.)
