Superstitions and the supernatural run deep in the heart and sole of the Thai people and as we start the Buddhist New Year we thought it appropriate to look back on what made the news headlines in the Kingdom over the last twelve months concerning Ghosts, spirits and the supernatural
Krabi Ghostbusters Combat Spirits with Ancient T-shirt Magic
One by one, they started fainting. Young and old. Men and women. Ever since July, members of the Baan Tai village in Krabi province suddenly started fainting. Some later died.
Unsure of the cause of their mysterious malady, it didn’t take long for locals to determine the most likely cause: ghosts. Now, armed with ancient knowledge to ward off the malevolent spirits, residents are pushing back to protect their very souls.
Residents of Baan Tai village in Krabi province field deployed red T-shirts and other creative displays to ward off soul-starved ghosts.
Homeowner Rayong Boonroong, 70, said Sunday that she herself fainted last month and became fearful for her life, especially after a relative dreamed the God of the Underground was out harvesting fresh souls from the living.
To discourage the wraiths from entering their homes, residents have started hanging red T-shirts and signs to scare off the gullible ghosts.
“This household has no faint-hearted people!” reads one of the signs. “Only strong persons live here!”
The ghosts are believed to be targeting residents born on Wednesdays – just like Rayong.
“This helps me feel more relieved,” she said of the spirit-repelling shirt.
Darunee Wangsop, 26, went one better. She erected a scarecrow wearing a red T-shirt atop a motorcycle in front of her home.
“It looks like someone is guarding us all the time,” she explained.
It’s not the first time in recent memory that the T-shirt solution has been deployed to guard a community’s immortal souls.
Villagers in Buriram province last year used the same strategy to protect themselves from a tall, headless man who claimed several souls while the slept.

‘Possessed by Ghosts,’ Villagers Force Neighbors to Strip
Two women and one man in eastern Thailand are facing charges for forcing their family members and neighbors to strip naked in the street of their village, reportedly on the order of a ghost.
Police said the three suspects claimed they were possessed by a phi pob when they herded seven residents of a village in Khok Soong district into the street at knifepoint on Saturday and told them to take off their clothes.
After the seven victims, including one woman, complied, the three “possessed” perpetrators burned all their clothes to appease the ghost, said Col. Ponglert Srisakrapikupta, commander of Khok Soong Police Station.
Police were soon alerted, and officers disarmed the three suspects and brought them to the police station, where they were charged with physical assault, unlawful coercion and unlawful detention.
Police face off with three suspects reportedly possessed by a ghost known as phi pob Saturday in Sa Kaeo province.
“They said they felt like something heavy fell upon them, and they were unconscious of what they were doing,” Ponglert said Monday. “I don’t know how that could possibly be true.”
The suspects were identified as Thongchai Kan-ob, 50; Srinak Boonnueng, 44; and Pornchai Kan-ob, 42. Ponglert said the victims were either family members or neighbors of the three suspects. He added that some of the victims were slightly wounded during the altercation.
“The victims said they had no choice but to comply with the [suspects’] instruction,” Ponglert said.
Phi Pob is a well-known ghost in folklore, notable for its purported ability to possess humans. Many communities in rural Thailand report sightings or hauntings by phi pob each year.
The three suspects were granted bail Sunday, and they have sought exorcism from a necromancer in Aranyaprathet, Ponglert said over the telephone.

Possessed in Pattaya
The incident began outside of the offices of a Thai newspaper on Pattaya Third Road where journalists heard and saw a girl screaming on the pavement close-by and offered assistance.
The girl was accompanied by 10 of her friends and it was decided that the best way to “heal” her was to take her to the Pratamnak mountain behind the Pattaya City sign where ghosts are thought to reside.
The group arrived at the location and after a ceremony where holy water from the nearby temple on the mountain was placed over the girl’s head and prayers were offered by her friends to the ghosts, she miraculously returned to normal after a further bout of screams as the ceremony took place.

Interesting snippets A year of Ghosts Ghouls and Goblins:
Did you know that it is traditional in Thailand when sleeping in another person’s home that you should ask permission from the phra phum (spirit ghost of the land) to stay in the house. The visitor would then be asked to thank the ghost when they left. This custom still exists in some rural areas of the country, but you probably won’t be asked to do this as a foreigner. However, some Thais will even perform this ritual before going to sleep in a hotel room.
The most Haunted Hotels in Asia; in an article written by ‘Best Resorts in Asia’ on the 3rd September 2015, they listed three hotels in Bangkok rating them in the top four most haunted hotels across Asia. (They were in descending order First Hotel, Asia Hotel and Baiyoke Sky Hotel)
