Anyone have experience with Chinese excavators?

I’m considering buying a mini-excavator for our farm. I’ve owned a Takeuchi in USA (DB235) and like the quality. Up here in Surin, Kubota has better service probably, though not quite as strong a boom. Chinese excavators are getting up in quality these days, and should be cheaper unless Thailand tariffs them a lot. Anyone experienced with any of the common brands, \such as SANY?

Stick with the Kubota--local spares and service at your door.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. True, I never found a cost-effective small loader. A Kubota KX33-4 would do the job, and probably cost less than my favorite Takeuchi, and have better service. Kubota is great for our 5018 tractor. Hope they’re not just selling them at list price, as I want a thumb and several buckets. My Dad used to say that the biggest excavator that would fit on the job was the most cost-effective. This Zaxis 350 we saw in Romania recently would be great, but where to park it?

I finally got back and measured our place. A 1.55m wide K33 is too wide to fit through many places between trees and such. There is a 1M wide to 1.3 M telescoping track unit called the U17-3, kinda smaller than I prefer, but less than 2/3 the price. Just went to Kubota, and they said they’re completely out of stock, plus doesn’t offer any bucket size other than 60cm. (The girls at the local TaTum shop kind of said ‘huh?’ when I asked about one. Didn’t inspire buyer confidence. Haha! ) Hard to sell if you make people wait while you get around to making a unit. Takeuchi has a similar unit, so I’ll try them. Updated: the Tacheuchi small unit, TB217R, is not usual Japanese quality. Made in China, light duty, some issues. And when motivated (by possible lost commission) Kubota located a U17-3 at another branch. So I’ll go with the higher quality/durability/service as Ferret and Mahdam recommended. Thanks! Your commission will be in draft beer. The durability/functionality of the U17-3 is highly rated. I’ll try dealing with the missing accessories/features I want later. It will be great to have such a tool on the farm, use of which I learned at my father’s knee, so to speak. Among other things, we’re going to do serious composting to make our own soil improvement, turning it with the excavator.

Anyone have experience adding a thumb to a Kubota K17-3? Has to be after-market, as Kubota Thailand doesn’t offer any accessories for K17 except pneumatic hammer. Likewise, tips for source for trenching (200mm) and cleanup/grading bucket (1M)? A thumb is hugely useful.

What the f**k do you think 99% of the expats here do you think want to do any anything of that stuff ???? Stargazer keep looking at the stars please !!!

That seems a bit over the top. The forum does have a section for Land D.I.Y., and this thread is on topic.

What I don’t understand are complaints that a member is just not interested in a topic. It seems obvious that if you’re not interested, just don’t take part! There are a lot of topics that only interest a few. For example, I’m considering buying a MIG welder to do a better job on our buildings with light tubular steel construction. What forum topic would be appropriate? Or are no Surin Farang at all interested in/active in such? Wasn’t this forum started by a builder?

If you want a "cheap" older IHI 55UJ I have one for sale.
Bunch of new stuff in it though. New hydraulic pump, fully renovated engine etc...

Thanks, Pat. A missed opportunity, as I already bought a new Kubota U17-3. It has a very good servicibility rating, and as I plan to use it on the farm for the next 20-25 years if I’m lucky, and it should be trouble free. After several days operating it, digging and fixing washouts on our rice field perimeter road, I am learning its limitations. I prefer a 3.5 to 4 ton excavator minimum, like a KX-33 or Takeuchi DB235, but they’re too wide to run into some of the places between trees and such. The U17-3 is just 1.7 tons, and has limited digging force and lifting ability. It is all it can do to lift our 6 disc and walk with it to move it around! If you put the blade down, it does better. Now I see why Kubota doesn’t offer bigger buckets. Kubota booms seem weaker to me than Takeuchi’s, so I’ll have to be careful crowding. My elder brother managed to twist even a Takeuchi boom by digging too aggressively and crowding at the same time—and like my Dad, he was a pro. He was used to much bigger rigs, though.

You sound experienced. What area do you live? We might enjoy getting together and talking. We’re near Rattanaburi.

(See image 9091) Excavator is now building its own parking place as an extension of our carport. The QCon block is for another project.

My phone this year is +66 0621655402. My middle name is Arvid, after my Swedish uncle Arvid Bjorn. We’re multicultural friendly, didn’t hold it against him for not being Polish. We’re pouring concrete Monday. We come in to Surin from time to time, could stop by some PM.
