Nakhon Ratchasima governor Wichian Chantharanothai plans to convene a meeting of government agencies on Friday to find ways to tackle the worsening drought in the northeastern province.

Wichian said on Thursday that he would also announce drought disaster zones after the meeting, covering 14 districts that have been hit by a shortage of rain.

The disaster zones will be based on figures of damage to be officially presented by the Nakhon Ratchasima's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office.

The meeting will be attended by agricultural officers for districts and the province, the chief provincial irrigation officer, the provincial chief disaster prevention officer and representatives of all waterworks offices in the province as well as representatives of all hospitals in the province.

Wichian said the hardest hit districts included None Thasi, Khong, Bua Yai, Sida, and Huay Thalaeng.

The Nakhon Ratchasima's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has reported that 550,000 rai of paddy fields and 140,000 rai of other crops in 14 districts have been hit by the drought. The figures of damage increased as officials surveyed the damage in the districts.

Many villagers have complained that their lush green paddy fields turned into dry weed fields after the rains stopped, shortly after they had planted their rice.

This drought is for real and has effected most of southern isaan. We bought two portable pumps the other day for CRU. Were taking water from two large ponds for irrigation of napier gras. Our pond is still about 6 inches low and in my 13 years in this area have never seen it this dry.

Sorry to hear of your problems GL. If you are dry the rest of the province must be in dire straights.

OK. Rain started just as I posted the above. :DIts nice but far from being whats needed.:(

The lack of any substancial rain has also devestated rice production in our area near Krasang in Buriram. We are very fortunate to have our land sandwiched between three large reserviors,
and a newly dug Klong. The picture below shows just how fortunate we have been to have accsess to this water. Oh, and yes a family that take a huge pride in producing it.

There has been no shortage of rain in the Prakhonchai area this year. Harvesting has started, the rice is all over the roads drying, and villagers are happy with the yield.

Nearby rice mill has slashed the price of rice to 10.50/kg from 17.80 a week ago

That is a very low price Nick, and is probably the rice mill trying to earn extra profit on the backs of the poor farmers desperate for some cash to pay back the loans for fertilizer, and the harvester, ect.
Rice direct from the field in our area is getting 12.00bht per kilo, not sure about dried.
Sis in law says there are only four familes in our village that have managed to produce any rice worth selling!

The price is slightly higher that the starting price last year which was around 9baht. I expect the price to drop soon as more supplies come in.

If only the villagers would extend their loans for 3 months or so, the extra interest would be offset by far higher prices. I tried telling them that some years ago, but to no avail. They need money today -not necessarily to pay back the loans -but for abundant supplies of Lao Khao

That price of 17.80 was for last years rice the 10.50 is for the new crop. Yes you did not have your normal rain and its also normal for your area to harvest first.
