Let them eat cake or grow Bananas.

Rice

Resident Smart Arse
With age and seeing it all before there is not too much that can incense me to rage. :rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage::rage:

The government will encourage rice farmers to grow bananas to supplement their income as rice prices continue to fall, said Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan yesterday.
Responding to a question by People's Party (PP) MP Narongdech Ularnkul on the government's plan to help shore up rice prices in the market, Mr Pichai said prices are on a downward trend due to an oversupply. As such, he said the government is looking at other valuable crops that farmers could easily grow and profit from.
One crop that was being considered was bananas, he said, noting banana trees have high yields and are in high demand in foreign markets, including Japan, where the demand for bananas has been estimated to be as high as one million tonnes per year.

I would love to plant my foot up plain up his arse the ignorant Kwai. Oh just grow Bananas in a rice paddy there's a good Somchai of you trot.
What an idiot ! He must know sweet F All about farming or even gardening for that matter. He obviously does not even know how long they take to grow.

Just issue a press statement on his dick head musings to show what fools they have in government. What an embarrassment.

In the article they predict 9 Baht a kg but it will be more like 6. This will cause social mayhem. This is on top of forcing farmers not to burn imposing further costs of one extra plough.
The rice glut is caused by India, They had a knee jerk during Covid and stopped all rice exports. They thought they were going to starve, Well all that rice they stock piled is being released now.

I do hope that you are not in favour of burning?

No I am not.

In the follow up to this story The minister was asked to clarify a few of his points how they managed without ridicule is amazing.

"It's not about switching from rice to bananas. If farmers can grow bananas to supplement their income, they are encouraged to do so. It's just an example of potential crops," he said in the interview.
As an urgent measure, the National Rice Policy Committee proposed an additional payment of 1,000 baht per tonne for off-season rice, capped at 10 rai per farmer.
For medium- and long-term solutions, he said the government would help farmers earn more income through greater productivity and the expansion of export markets.

Vietnam currently produces 1.3–1.5 tonnes of rice per rai, while Thailand's average yield remains at 600–800 kilogrammes per rai, he noted.

@CO-CO read the last line of that extract. Its very true. Now why is that. ?
Vietnam has invested heavily in improving Thailand's own Mali 105 to grow better, with less water and at higher yield.

Vietnam government prioritizes rice production, facilitating access to technology, research, and support for farmers.
Vietnam has intensive farming practices for Vietnamese farmers yo utilize techniques like crop rotation and integrated pest management to maximize rice production
AND here is the kicker. NOT to burn but plough in to increase soil and enhance nutrients and moisture retention. Which I have been doing on my wife's farm for some time now. The new regulations will have the unintended consequence to improve rice yield.

Time for yet another rant!
The Thai establishment has run the rice industry into the impoverished rice paddy. Made Billions and hardly invested anything back into the industry in 50 years!
Khaow Dork Mali was introduced in 1958 from an irradiation mutant trial. Yes plant 105 was the best out of 1000 trialed, AND they have done hardly nothing since.
I can't say nothing but with their meager budget they do what they can.
So this ignoramus can support the industry instead of wondering why Vietnam does better and suggesting Rice farmers grow Bananas FFS.
Second Rant over :rage::rage::rage:

The Somchai brigade will still be running around paddies bare foot for another 200 years, unfortunately.

We have been discing the stubble in for 5 years since i arrived. Many local farmers still burn, and the smoke is such at times that we hide inside with HEPA air filters. I’ve tried to talk to my wife about the dismal economics of rice growing, but she sees producing rice as their only option on what little land they have. More bananas are being grown, but i suspect that will result in an oversupply with prices declining. Tough times for Isaan.

There has never been a good time for Isaan apart from the disastrous Rice Pledge and the poverty alleviation programs by Mr Thaksisn.
Its truly unbelievable that that brother and sister criminal double act are the only ones to do anything. WOW what a count of a country.
