Pest resistant plants and shrubs

Two years ago we topped up one of our rice fields and dug a lake, built a 1 bedroom guest cottage out there, and began transforming it into an oasis of sorts. We like it so much we stay there most of the time rather than in the village. Quieter, views across the vast Isaan rice fields.

As we are learning to farm Thai-style, I am noticing some plants are naturally pest-resistant, while others get chewed on mercilessly by bugs and wind up with lacework leaves. As I prefer to not use pesticides, I’d like to lean towards planting the pest-resistant shrubs and trees.

I’d appreciate advice about what local plants fit the bill. Ones so far I’ve found include ‘Yellow bells’, Strawberry Tree, mango, coco palm, papaya, bougainvillea, passion fruit, lilys, ironwood tree, bamboo, banana, and several others that I don’t know the common English names for (such as the blue flowered vine that is edible, and the ‘vegetable hummingbird’.

I’ve built in sprinklers, 12 zones, about 100 sprinkler heads, to help us keep it all watered in a practical fashion. We have a good well.
