Something new at immigration.

FERRET

WELL WORN MEMBER
When I presented at Jomtien this morning confident all my paperwork was in order, I was asked by Godzilla
where was a reciept for my TM30, GOOD QUESTION.
Un beknown to me, the skulking pr*cks had stapled one in the back of my passport at my last report. and not said anything.
Not a biggie really, just nip across the alley and get a copy however, it would be nice if they told you.

That is not new.

For (maybe) 2 years the first thing that the reception desk checks is that you have a current TM30 receipt.

Well, it's a first for me.

Probably because (you said) they did a new one at the time of your last extension (no idea why).

A couple of years ago you had to file a new TM30 if you returned to Thailand. This year I got the resort manager to do a new one - and they weren't interested, saying (as is the official 'rule') "you don't need a new TM30 if you are returning to the same address".

How in any way is the TM30 your responsibility? But they seem to be pushing this line for some time. Because Landlords can't be bothered.
In most cases the landlord is the Mrs though. So they know they can do this.

If TM30's are not filed it clearly states that the individual is responsible - and would pay the fine.

In this case the Ferrets own the property

I just wrote a thread about TM30. You can ‘Export’ it when you enter a TM30 online, which allows you to save a PDF copy, which I suppose is a good idea to carry with you on your phone when traveling!

The immigration site makes it clear that even if the farang owns the property, the TM30s must be filed.

That is correct but also be aware that reality and the Immigration website don’t always converge

No farang EVER owns a property in LOS , and don't come with the condo sceme !!! You will never see the total ownerbook of the building !!!
Sorry for those who believe in it , it is like religion. One has to believe but there will never be proof !!!

As long as our arses are covered---DILLIGAF.
The rules say that even if a farang owns the house, the TM30 must be filed on any farang staying there (even yourself). Whoever owns the house is subject to fine if they don’t file the TM30 on each arrival. Hotels where you stay repeatedly apparently are allowed to have your info on file. I cannot find such an exception for a non-hotel. Probably better, Ferret, to just do it online. It’s not that hard once you get the hang of it.

What may muddy the water here is erratic enforcement. We only got cited once in 6 years. It’s maybe a bit like the Asian Boss video: strict laws, laxly enforced.

We have a little local farang group near Rattanaburi who get together for lunch now and then. About 14 guys now plus Thai wives and relatives. Many countries. A Danish guy who got a ‘marriage visa’ just told us that a van with 7 immigration officials showed up at their house unannounced and did a thorough walkthrough and questioning session. Glad I skipped that visa.

They never turn up unannounced. Short notice maybe. You might not be there and what about character witnesses?
If a van of 7 turned up I would make some quick phone calls and match them instantly in locals. I have done it before. I have an elderly lady friend. She was one of my character witnesses the first time around.
They decided to have a go at her. For no reason. She stood up and said who the hell do you think you are? This went counter to all I knew about officialdom and village folk. She ripped strips of them, then Two Pooh yai Bans ripped into them. Then a crew of PEA workers that I know came in and started shouted why are you here. You don't have any power over us. They started it. They got in their fancy pick up and spun the wheels down my driveway. To this day. I look after that lady. I drop the odd treats for her family and buy here new bicycles when they wear out. She is 75 and sells sweets and vegetables by bicycle in nearby villages. What she did that day endeared me to her for ever. This time around I will have the same people here. Minus the PEA crew.
Their job is not to come and harass you and shake you down for coffee money. It is for making sure you are in a bonafide relationship.
Throwing weight around, I don't take to it too well. They can cancel my visa. I don't really care. I will miss my dog. That will be it.
Anything they do will be witnessed by 3 independent observers. I will let you know how the next one goes. I will be doing my extension based on marriage next week.

Skipping that visa may not help ..I am on an extension based on retirement and I had a visit too

(anyone with a "visa" will not get a visit from Immigration).

You may be right: he might have been still in the approval process. The USA is (perhaps justifiably) skeptical of marriage as a justification for immigration. Despite having been thoroughly vetted for a ‘fiancée visa’, two years after getting married we had to re-submit everything to prove it wasn’t a sham marriage. The removal of permanent resident ‘condition’ was still pending 18 months later when my wife became an American citizen.

I have been involved in many visa applications for different countries and I hate the arrogance of the US visa process.

How anyone can base a visa decision on an interview with an Isaan rice muncher is beyond me….a friends partner of over 10 years had no chance in an interview situation- and yet this 58 year old would have been a perfect visitor, for her proposed two holiday in Vegas, where a family member was celebrating a birthday.

I had considered taking my partner to San Francisco but that experience made me decide not to bother.

For UK visas, and most definitely for Schengen visas, the process is very prescriptive and criteria based. Meet the criteria and you are approved.
