Surin community backs sugar factory, power plant expansion
SURIN, 19th October 2018 (NNT) - The people fo Khok Sa-at subdistrict in Surin province have expressed interest in the plan to expand a sugar factory and a power plant in their area, as more jobs would be created for about 300 households.
The President of Khok Sa-at Subdistrict Administrative Organization, Suwan Suppatkul, said regarding the second public forum reporting the environmental assessment of the sugar cane factory and Surin power plant projects that the establishment of these facilities will help create jobs for some 300 households in the area.
Concerning the sugar factory that started operating 12 years ago, she said the factory caused dust pollution, effecting residents in the area. The factory has then been requested to plant fast-growing trees and install nets, which have significantly reduced the pollution.
Khok Sa-at subdistrict in Surin is located on a highland, where rice farming cannot yield suitable harvest. Villagers have instead chosen to farm sugar canes and feed their produce to the sugar factory, gaining them more income.
The subdistrict administration chief said the power plant project would not affect the community, while its expansion will benefit villagers, and could result in more employment opportunities.
