The event is aimed to honor his Majesty the King and also to celebrate Thai Elephant Day which is on March 13th every year. Beside sixty fully decorated elephants marching through Surin's main streets, giving alms to Buddhist monks on elephant back on March 14th is also a highlight of the event.
Surin is widely known for its domestication of elephants. The province is the home of the ethnic tribe called Kui, who have expertise in capturing, domesticating and training wild elephants. The knowledge has been passed on from their forefathers to the current generation. Their elephants are treated with respect and adopted as family members and companions for life.
