Probably the best book for learning basic spoken and written Thai language is:

"Fundamentals of the Thai Language"

It was first published in the mid-1950s and was co-written by an Australian and a Thai (surely the best possible mixture). Hence, some clever, light-hearted asides among the serious stuff.

The early black covered version and the later sky blue covered version both look like thick hard-covered university text books and are very difficult to obtain nowadays.

The book is divided into 26 chapters, designed to be studied over 26 weeks.
