Thongdee Yeerum, father of well-known Thai action-movie star Tony Jaa, died early Friday, reports said. Thongdee, 69, succumbed to heart failure at Surin Hospital in Surin province at about 2am, a family member told the press.
The relative said Thongdee had not seen his son, born as Tachakorn Yeerum and later changed his name to Ja Phanom, for more than a year. Sorrow due Tony Jaa's absence undermined the father's health, the relative said. It was reported early last year that Tony Jaa and his wife had gotten into conflict with his father and both families had distanced themselves since.
Ja Phanom reportedly has been told about his father's passing. He is in Thailand for the shooting of Hong Kong's Sha Po Lang 2, but his specific whereabouts are unknown.
Tony Jaa is a martial artist, physical educator, actor, choreographer, stuntman and director. His films include the Ong-Bak series, Muay Thai Warrior, and Tom Yum Goong (The Protector).
