Adoption

Has anyone here adopted a family member’s kid? I mean a full legal adoption, registered with your country’s embassy etc..? Thoughts and suggestions welcome. TIA.

My understanding is the Thai adoption will fight you tooth and nail and want big money...is what I was told in 2011. So I adopted my niece in the USA. Adoption here is very unfriendly to Foreigner if the family members are still alive. My daughter lived with me for 12 yrs in the US and we gave her a different name at adoption. Upon returning to Thailand she was 18 and we wanted her to have a Thai ID and Passport in her US name to match her US passport and US records. It was not an easy process but finally got it done but Thailand still/will not recognize the adoption. Her birth parents have to sign all thailand documents with her. When we went to have the adoption registered that center went on about how we did not use the Thai system and we would have to have the State Dept validate the US adoption and then blah blah blah, pay pay pay. We said forget it. She has her Thai passport and ID card in her US name thanks to Amphur that all we needed. At 20 she is on her own then. Just what I know

I have an Aussie mate and his Thai wife who years ago tried to adopt her 10 yo niece. Her parents were deadbeats so, to try and give her
a chance, they went through the B/S of trying. It all turned to sh*t when her parents demanded an obscene settlement to sign the papers.
It never happened and the last I heard, both parents were in jail for smuggling drugs and the girl passed away from an overdose. At least they tried.

I guess my question to you is WHY? Are you going to take them to the US for a better education and duel citizenship ? If not why adopt?
