Japan visa waiver starts July 1
Published: 25 Jun 2013 at 10.27Online news:
The Japanese embassy announced Tuesday that the visa exemption for Thai tourists will become effective on July 1.

A notification on its website on Tuesday morning, in Thai and Japanese, says the waiver will apply to short-term visitors staying up to 15 days. Those planning to stay longer or visiting Japan for business or other purposes still have to apply for a visa.

Immigration officers can ask about the purpose of the visit and may request to see relevant documents such as return tickets or other documents, the announcement says.

Enquiries can be made to telephone 02-207-8503 or 02-696-3003.

Japan is a popular destination for Thai tourists. With the visa exemption, Kasikorn Research Centre estimated a total of around 300,000 Thais will visit Japan in 2013, up by about 48% from 202,015 in 2012.

It will also generate more business for tour operators with an expected value of 12 billion baht in 2013, according to the research centre.
