SURIN -- A pack of big black dogs is preying on young cattle and buffalo, eating the calves' insides and leaving the carcasses in fields at night, according to a member of a local administration.

Pacharapol Pengpinich, 44, of Ban Hua Khao, a member of the Khalamae tambon administration organisation, said he and four other TAO members went into the fields on Monday night to investigate why there were so many dogs barking out there.

They first suspected the dogs were howling because someone was taking them out to a field to kill them. And then, about 200 metres from the village, they saw a pack of six or seven large black dogs chasing and savaging a buffalo calf.

They were able to save the calf, which was about one month old, but the dog bites had opened many big wounds and some internal organs, including intestines, were poking out,

According to Mr Patcharapol, villagers said this was the eight calf to have been attacked by these black dogs. On the nights of Feb 6 and 7, the dog pack had attacked and killed seven cow and buffalo calves in villages nearby, tore open their bellies and eaten the internal organs.

Superstitious villagers were saying the dogs could be possessed by evil spirits. People in the area are anxiously preparing to protect their livestock from further attacks at night.

Yet another unforeseen consequence of the bucket truck removal. It was a cruel practice, but it kept the amount of stray dogs down at least. When banning the practice they did not implement a dog control measure did they. As this would be against Buddhists beliefs. Incidentally I have seen a number of dogs chasing livestock in the ricefields of late and knew this was a matter of time.

This talk of "Large black dogs" play into the local myth of The Pee Borb. The ghost that wonders around and eats the entrails of it's victims. Pee Borb can masquerade as a black dog.

Agreed. I was going to post again saying that this was clearly an urban, or rather rural, myth. The packs of dogs roaming the ricefields are not all black. All brown, maybe. Not only are black dogs favoured as food (Chinese, but there are lots of Chinese in this area), but a pack of black dogs would have to be Labs, Rotties, or Dobermans. Highly improbable.

Nothing that a couple of experianced spot light hunters couldnt sort in a short space of time. Bieng able to get within 200mrs, a 22.250 would do the job nicely.

How many dogs? Multiply by 4 and you get the number of feet. Multiply by 2 and you have the number of eyes. Any one of those numbers would be the winning lottery ticket number for Tuesday next 16th Feb..................BUY NOW!

Aussie style. A strong flashlight, a couple of shooters and a carton of beer cans on the back of an old rusty pick-up should clear up the myth in an evening or two. Don't forget to remove the bullets before cooking, as the metal can break your teeth!
