Very True, especially with Immigration.
Funny you would mention that as Natty prepares for the immigration police entrance exam.
The exam is 150 multiple choice questions. The questions cover 6 categories including immigration rules, English, Algebra?, the history of ASEAN, Thai customs and beliefs. Applicants must score a minimum of 60% in each subject.
The highest scores on the exam move forward to the physical and mental evaluation.
The ability to do Algebra is as important to immigration as the ability to speak English. When two or more have matching scores, those with a parent on the force receives priority, the second tie-breaker is the TOEIC score. Nepotism is more important than ability.
To keep rural applicants from soiling the force applicants must report to the Police headquarters to hand in hard copies of their diplomas etc with less than 48 hours notice. The same notice will be given for the physical and mental evaluations. 4 separate trips to BKK are required. No discount airline tickets for you!
Application for the 350 posts have closed with a little over 17,000 received. The enlistment is for corporals not commissioned officers. The starting pay is 8,600 baht a month and the salary doubles every 7 years.
Why would 17,000 people compete for a job paying 8,600 baht a month? Perhaps there is more than meets the eye.
On a positive note the Immi bureau hires women. 7% of the police force is female, of the 320 hires last year over 80% were female.
The process is unnecessarily expensive to enter to the point that in order to write the exam, you must wear navy or black sweat pants, white or black running shoes and a white t shirt. Solid colours only, no visible name brands.
