Climate change in Surin

Stargazer

Surin Legend
Some have commented that Surin has historic water shortage issues. My question is whether the current climate change in process is likely to make Surin hotter and drier or not. Our family rice fields are dependent on seasonal rains (no irrigation canals nearby) or meager and easily depletable well water from 45 meter deep aquifer layer. Under the government program to provide low cost small 'lakes' (about 2,000 THB cost), and the resultant proliferation of such, I can foresee overpumping from the aquifer coming up in that event. Can long-time residents comment, and cite links to studies relevant?

A good question, Mel.

When it comes weather-related water issues twenty years is a blink of the eye...

I wonder if there are relevant studies for Surin in English.

My question refers to studies of the projected impacts of climate change on Surin climate.

In my opinion climate change is irrelevant on local levels.

We simply have to adapt to the climate changing. Like people have done forever.
Not rocket science.

A note on weather and temperature.

1999 we apparently had one night of 4 degrees C. That's coooold. My previous next door neighbor has daily data from around 1984.

And the hottest I've measured was 52 C around 2001 or 2002...

If Surin falls in an area of long term decreased rainfall, and higher average temperatures, it will have a big impact on the many rice farmers without irrigation. They may have to adapt by moving to Bangkok. There is an area in central Asia where the area of desert is expanding now.

Are you saying that the Surin rice farmers will have to move their rice fields to Bangkok - or seek alternative work in Bangkok?:)

I think it is virtually impossible to predict what may happen down the line re rainfall and weather in general. Having been here for almost 36 years (21 in Prakhonchai), there have been some years with good rains and others with virtually nothing. Members suggest that rainfall this year in Surin has been low, but here in PKC we have had much rain and ponds/lakes etc are virtually full

Years ago when in the UK I undertook a project for my employers to investigate the chance of flooding from the North Sea causing problems to homes in coastal districts on the east coast. I spent much time talking to fishermen and other boat operators, and maritime specialists, but no patterns emerged. My employer. a major UK Insurer, decided to take a chance with flood cover on coastal communities, and so far as I know they did not lose money

Well, in my experience the past 20 years or so there have been good years and bad years. A bit of a cycle.

Southeast Asia to bear the brunt of worsening global climate, IPCC warns

I cannot imagine many of today's 'yoof' wanting to labour out in rice fields in the same way as thier ancestors.

That is the best reason to legalize marijuana.
At one time sticky Thai-sticks ruled supreme on the stoner charts.
Thailand might well be looking at returning to those "historical roots".
