Extending 'permission to stay' at Kap Cheong

Why would any Farang require to drive outside Thailand on their temporary licence? Surely they use their permanent "home country" licence?

Because they do not have a home country license and they are a dumb ass. and try to use it and get busted as only the 5 year DL being a smart card is accepted . And before you ask Yes I have rented cars and driven on a 5 year Thai licenses in the USA and you do not need a IDP. I know of others that have done the same thing in the UK, Austraila and Canada.

I've driven in many countries on my UK licence (issued when you pass a stringent test and expires when you are 70 years old). Twenty countries in all, but needed a temporary licence in one - Qatar.

In the UK, Thais did need an IDP (associated with a Thai licence) to legally drive a rented vehicle. In my opinion, if Farangs are not able to obtain a home country licence, they should not be permitted to drive anyway.

They don't now as a lot of farangs are using their 5 year dl in he UK with no problems.

I'm sure you are right. I have not been there for 13 years. Then, a Thai licence was useless without an accompanying IDP. Of course, I had a UK licence so I did not need to use my Thai licence. How many other countries accept Thai driving licences (without IDPs) other than the 4 that you mention?

And "why discriminate?" Would you allow a Thai to drive in your country when there is a distinct possibility that the licence was "bought"?

I'm going back to my 1 year marriage O visa which I get from the states while here each year visiting family. Much less hassles and horseshit, plus it's an unlimited one year multi entry, easy to do in Boston at the Consulate General, no fuss about money or extra paperwork and all that extension crap. Just cross the border every 90 days and pay the thieves a few baht in Cambodia. I'll not jump through their asinine hoops any more. I'm not trying for permanent residency, so really don't care about extensions and time in country and all that. And once again I'll be leaving Thailand for the states once a year for at least a month.

I have been thinking along the same lines as you Cent. Surin first suggested this remedy a while ago. It's an excuse to have a short holiday every 3 months and a long one every 12 months plus, you can come and go as you please. If I get the runaround this week at KCI I may put this plan into action. I think you can go to Savanaket to get the 12 month O visa.......or go to Chonburi Immigration.

Savannakhet is the only consult in all of SE Asia offering this is. For an O multi based on marriage but you have to be legally married, Buddha does not count. As for Sin City its an option. If you were to pick up a O multi from there it diffently would be forgery. The Dogy Retirement is an option but remember any extension you get from out of area KCI will not let you do a 90 day report.

Lets put a few things in perspective. Before I retired in 2002 I was clocking some 48 long-haul International flights each year. I had been doing this for the previous 4 years too. Before then, maybe 10 to 12 long-haul flights each year for the previous 12 years or more. In short, I have had my full fill of International flights and, for one reason at least, I came to Thailand to find the easy, peaceful life away from the hussle and bussle of International airports and the jet-set scene. Now Immigration may have a few quirks and foilables when it comes to extending one's permission to stay but I can say in all honesty I have never once been turned away through lack of documentation or sent into Kap Cheown for additional photcopies. I have usually been in and out of Immigration within the hour for the past 11 years with virtually no trouble at all. All it takes to achieve an easy extension of stay is a little bit of reading on the internet, and this forum probably provides all the information you need, a little bit of preparation and a willingness to go the extra mile in the preparation of your documentation. I have never seen the need for International travel once a year, plus 3 or 4 border runs each year, plus all the assoicated expense, as necessary to legally stay in Thailand. Follow the simple guide lines that have already been published in this forum and you should find it relatively quick, easy and cheap to extend your stay without the need to ever leave Thailand. :D

Un married people can also get visa's in Savannaket. My. Mate got one last month for supporting a Thai child, for example. 'B' visa's are also available if all the paperwork is correct (I got one there 3 years ago)

Thats true but the key is you have to have a kid and some don't so they do not qualify.

Was your friend issued a single entry O based on support of a child which he will have to extend at immigration inside Thailand ?
