electric bill

My wife said that the electricity would be off to facilitate repairs to the water tower/water system. I did raise an eyebrow but there it is, straight from the horse's mouth so to speak.

"Okay dear, you informed me that the electricity would be turned off. That did not happen. So dear..." and so forth.

Which part of that was the mystery, Nomad...the part that you didn't inquire ?

The flourescent bulb on the stoep went out yesterday so I am continuing my plan to replace each fitting with LEDs as each bulb fails. The new fitting has a bulb that's good for 35,000 hours. That will outlast me!

Do you just do the standard replace the tube with an LED one? If so, do you know not converting the baton tube holder you waste up to 6 watts powering a now defunct ballast coil. In addition to the added consumption you also have a fuse in the other end of the tube and one in the so called LED starter which is in fact just creating a short across it. Oh what about those fuses? They tend to blow up with power surges greatly reducing the life of your tube that is not really dead at all.

I replace the whole fitting. The original fittings are almost 20 years old now so are getting a little tatty. I changed to electronic starters a few years ago. Also the dome holder stud bolts get rusty.

For information: The purchase was made at HomePro. The lights on show are priced as being for sale without "bulbs". I asked for my intended purchase to be fitted with an 11 Watt bulb. "The price includes a 16 Watt bulb". "Could you change it for an 11 Watt bulb?" "No!"

A 16Watt LED bulb as well as an 11 Watt one seem to stronger than needed.

I shall be trying it when it gets dark in the next 30 minutes and I shall let you know. The 14 Watt lights in the 2m x 3m bathrooms are over the top but this one is outside on the stoep.

I think 11 Watt would have been adequate but 16 Watt is not over the top. The stoep ceiling is 3.30 metres high and the stoep is open on three sides. The lighting is sufficient to allow reading to be comfortable. Far better than the previous 2 nights in virtual blackness anyway.

"...as I spend most of the day outside the house."

And I do as well, so no need for A/C for us most of the time. That, along with great ventilation, lots of shade and large and well-placed windows with screens, a double front door with a screen, and just two of us most of the time gives us an average electric bill of about Bt 700-800/month.
